Assembly of sections is best accomplished on a flat surface at a comfortable height. Plywood placed on sawhorses provides an ideal platform. Once posts and/or post sleeves are installed, insure they are plumb and level. Prior to fastening any sections to the posts, install Base Cove Moulding for a finished look. Install Base Cove Moulding before installing rail sections as it may not be installed after sections are attached to posts.
Cut Rails to Length:
1. Measure the distance between properly installed plumb posts. Before cutting, ensure all screws will fasten into the rail and none fall into the routed baluster hole. It is unsafe to have rails installed where ALLscrews are not secured into solid material. To provide adequate space for the mounting bracket, leave a minimum of 1-5/16 distance between each end of rail and the edge of the first baluster hole.
2. Trim the top and bottom rails to fit with same baluster spacing at each end of top and bottom rail. Remember to trim equally on both ends of each rail to ensure that balusters are uniformly spaced at each end and plumb.
Install Rail Brackets:
3. Center mounting brackets on underside of bottom rail. Inset bracket 1/16” from rail’s end (figure a). When the screws are tightened they will pull the rail section against the post resulting in a tighter, cleaner fit.
4. Using rail brackets as templates, mark the two hole locations on each end of bottom rail and pre-drill using a 1/8” drill bit.
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for underside of top rail (side with routed holes, figure b).
6. Secure both brackets to the underside of bottom rail using two #10 x 3/4 long screws.
7. Secure both brackets to the underside of the top rail using two #10 x 3/4 long screws.

Install Infill:
8. Next, insert one baluster into each pre-routed hole in the bottom rail (figure c).
9. Position top rail onto balusters by inserting balusters into pre-routed holes in top rail. Accomplish this step by holding the top rail at a slight angle and place balusters into the routed holes one at a time while lowering the top rail.
10. Once the section is assembled use the plastic straps to securely hold the section together until it is completely mounted to posts (figure c). See Strap Instructions later in this guide.
11. Cut provided crush block to approved height. Consult your local building official for the proper spacing between the deck and railing.
12. Place crush block on deck surface at midpoint between posts as a support and leveling aid for mounting the rail section. HINT: Temporarily using two crush blocks, one at each end, will make installation easier.
13. Temporarily position assembled section on the crush block between posts and ensure the rail is level.
14. Using rail brackets attached to bottom rail as a template, mark the three hole positions on post at each end of rail.
15. Remove assembled section so you can pre-drill the holes on the posts.
16. Pre-drill all post holes for bottom rail using a 1/8” drill bit.
17. Position the assembled section between the posts and level.
18. Using three #10 x 3/4 long screws, fasten bottom bracket to post and tighten fully. Repeat for opposite end
(Figure d).
19. With section still positioned between posts, use top rail brackets as a template and mark three hole positions on post at each end of rail.
20. Pull the section slightly toward the deck and predrill all post holes for the top rail using a 1/8 drill bit.
21. Using three #10 x 3/4 long screws, fasten top bracket to post and tighten fully. Repeat for opposite end.

Finishing Up:
22. Remove strap once section is completely installed.
23. Using PVC glue, attach one crush block to the underside of the bottom rail to fit between the deck surface and the bottom of the bottom rail. You do not need to glue crush block to the decking.
NOTE: The crush block allows the rail section to withstand normal distortion loads. Standing or sitting on the rail section is NOTrecommended for safety and performance reasons. Should unusual loads occur, however, the crush block minimizes the effect.
Strap Instructions:
1. Make a loop in one end of strap and insert it through the buckle (figure e).
2. Position one of the dog-bone armatures through strap (figure f). Pull strap tight to capture the armature.
3. Loop long end of strap around the rail/stair assembly and make a loop in the free end of the strap (figure g).
4. Insert loop into buckle and fold down the remaining dog-bone armature (figure h). Pull one end of the strap tight until it holds the assembled rail/ stair section together.

Assembly of sections is best accomplished on a flat surface at acomfortable height. Cutting longest section first and ensuring proper fit.
Note that the shoulder on the bottom rail was designed to be mounted with the shoulder facing inward but local customs may indicate otherwise. Either is acceptable (figure a).

Attach Brackets:
1. Using the rail bracket as a template, mark the locations of the screws on the bottom of the top and bottom rail. Please note the orientation of the bracket (Figure b & c).
2. Center the bracket in the middle of the rails. Inset the bracket back 1/16 from the end of the rails. When screwing the rails to the posts, this inset will allow the screws to ’pull’ the rail section toward the posts when fully tightened.
3. Using a 1/8” drill bit, pre-drill holes at all marked locations.
4. Screw the rail brackets to the top and bottom rails. The screws and brackets are powder coated stainless steel. Note that a square drive driver bit is included in the bag with the brackets. To minimize stripping the screw heads and chipping paint, discard the driver bit after each section is assembled.

Install Balusters/Spindles:
5. Attach the Square Balusters or Colonial Spindles. This is best accomplished on a flat horizontal surface such as the deck surface or plywood atop sawhorses.
6. Use the 3 long screws packaged separately. Note that there is a separate driver bit in the package of 3 long screws.
7. Engage the head of the screws onto the square drive bit and carefully position it through the predrilled hole at the bottom of the bottom rail and drive it through the top of the bottom rail about 1/8”. Note that the bottom of the Square Baluster and Colonial Spindle has a ’screw boss’ into which you will thread the screw (figure d).
8. Seat the bottom of the Square Baluster/Colonial Spindle over the protruding screw and finish screwing together. CAUTION: DO NOTOVERTIGHTEN. Over-tightening the screw will result in stripping out the screw boss Note that the raised shoulder on the top of the bottom rail helps position the Square Baluster/Colonial Spindle properly.
9. Position the Square Balusters/Colonial Spindles and place them inside the routed holes of the top rail (figure d).
10. Once the section is assembled use the plastic strap to securely hold the section together until it is completely mounted to posts (figure e). See Strap Instructions later in this guide .

12. Place crush block on deck surface at midpoint between posts as a support and leveling aid for mounting the rail section. HINT: Temporarily using two crush blocks, one at each end, will make installation easier.
13. Temporarily position assembled section on the crush block(s) between posts and ensure the rail is level.

17. Position the assembled section between the posts and level.
18. Using three #10 x 3/4 long screws, fasten bottom bracket to post and tighten fully. Repeat for opposite end (figure f). Use of a flex shaft drive, (available at most hardware stores) or a right angle screw driver may make this easier.
19. With section still positioned between posts, use top rail brackets as a template and mark three hole positions on posts at each end of rail.
20. Pull the section slightly toward the deck and predrill all post holes for the top rail using an 1/8 drill bit.
